Longing for something more

Written by on March 29, 2019

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Matthew 5:6

No book we read, no conversation we have, no sermon we hear, no spiritual discipline we practice, no Journey process we take can be transformative unless we have a thirst for a deeper life with God—and are prepared to receive it. So many of us are starving for something more. And this something more can be interpreted in many different ways. Perhaps we can begin to interpret this hunger for something more as a reflection of God’s Spirit at work, stirring in our hearts.

We long to know God more deeply and serve him more faithfully. Admittedly due to our life circumstances and our attentiveness to God, our awareness of this longing fluctuates. Sometimes we find ourselves resting secure, keenly aware of God’s loving presence and direction. And sometimes we are frustrated and discontent, finding ourselves reaching out, imploring him to take notice of us, and lead us. Other times, we may have very little sense of our longing for God, but we are aware of wanting to want God more deeply; this too is evidence of the Spirit’s work in our lives.

What is the current state of your heart’s longing for God?

And, through this current sense of longing, might the Spirit actually be inviting you to receive a more graceful and truthful way of life with Jesus?

You stir us to take pleasure in praising you, because you have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.

St. Augustine (354-430)
