Alan Hirsch & Disciplemaking

Written by on September 14, 2011

I have found myself recently pondering Alan Hirsch’s comments that “you cannot build a church on consumerism.” Hirsch is from South Africa and is a leading voice in the whole missional movement within the church. His words have drawn my attention back to the way our culture “mentors” or “disciples” us into certain ways of life. And it is this cultural mentoring that the gospel of Jesus confronts along the way of being his disciples or apprentices. In our case we have been mentored by our culture to be consumers. Listen in on this short video of Hirsch…asking yourself the questions: (1) What jumps out to you personally from Hirsch’s words? and (2) How is Jesus’ way of life personally confronting your way of life today?
